A bit about me.

I am Teresa, founder of No Pencil Required™ and Mum of three, Granny to two, a farmer’s wife and ex-nursery lead teacher. Working with children has been a part of my life for over 25 years, and I’ve managed, taught, and lead various Early Years settings.

The children who arrived with a bit more baggage than others, always pulled my heart strings, they drew me to them, and I felt compelled to get to know them and their families. Building connection was something I ‘just did’, I just didn’t know, or appreciate, how significant it was.

Now, after my years of professional and personal development, I recognise that my own personal history – a service child who moved around a lot, leaving friends behind, familial dysfunction and growing up in a disadvantaged area, where everyone lived in various states of poverty – I related to them. I understood their difficulty and feeling of disconnect. I understood the lives these families live and could speak to them without judgement.

I was also the good girl, never wanting to get it wrong or upset others, always needing to be top of the class, spending most of my early childhood in a freeze or fawn state.

I know what adverse life experiences are like to live with, the impact on confidence, self-worth, and self-belief and how these influence life choices in adulthood.

It’s this understanding that drives me to help children who find schools a challenge and support the adults who teach them.

  • No Pencil Required ™became the unnamed pedagogy that underpinned my practice of connection, relationship and collaboration. Although it didn’t get its name until 2021.
  • No Pencil Required ™ believes that everything a person needs to succeed can be found right within themselves when they know how – and they don’t need a pencil to do it! (Caveat – I am a big lover of all writing implements and think they are very important indeed).

My experiences have shaped my journey and now I am committed to providing a holistic, nurturing practice that considers the emotional wellbeing of both children and the adults who teach and guide them.

As a certified coach, therapeutic trauma-informed practitioner, mental health first aider and advocate, I have the privilege of understanding the deep impact a trauma-informed approach can have on the academic success for children.

My methodology is simple because I believe that a straightforward, accessible approach is essential for busy settings, and it is my mission to make the complexities of trauma-informed education comprehensible to all.

In my own professional journey, I collaborate with expert from diverse fields in child development. This has allowed me to integrate the latest research and findings into The No Pencil Required Trauma-Informed Approach™.

As part of my commitment to continuous professional development, I’m advancing my skills as one of the world’s first qualified certified Somatic Trauma-informed Coaches and Leaders, accredited at CPD, ICF and CMI level 7. Simultaneously, I’m training to become a certified Somatic Trauma-Informed Hypnotherapist, broadening my toolkit to offer comprehensive support that considers both cognitive and somatic aspects of trauma recovery. This journey underscores my dedication to staying innovative and effective in my approach and ensuring No Pencil Required™ is at the forefront of current practice to be best placed to support you exactly where you need me.

I am here to take you on your own No Pencil Required™ journey.

Together we can bring the change.
